Plan for College - Searching for a College
Searching for a College
Finding the right college or professional program is important. You need to find a good fit, academically and financially. Shop around and consider a number of different possibilities. Be a wise consumer!
  • Find a college that is affordable, has a good reputation, offers programs appropriate to your needs, is the right size, and is located in an appealing place.
  • Make a "shopping list" of your reasons for attending college and your expectations of what the degree will do for you.
  • Talk with your parents, teachers, and school counselors.
  • Consult college guidebooks or computer software to help narrow your choices.
  • You can get a quick look at most colleges and universities online. Consult IPEDS College Opportunities On-line, a site maintained by an arm of the U.S. Department of Education called the National Center for Education Statistics. Write for college catalogs and view books if a school doesn't have a Web site.
  • Virtual campus tours are great, but it's important that you take the time to visit the schools you're most interested in.
  • Don't rule out a college because it seems too expensive. Consult the school's financial aid office or make an appointment to speak with a KCAC counselor (502-584-0475 - Louisville Office / 812-288-4821, press 7 OR use ext 51660 - Jeffersonville Office).
We offer online planning tips for high school seniors, juniors, sophomores, and freshmen hoping to continue their education after graduation. You'll find great advice about planning, applying, and paying for college or other training.

Campus Visits
Campus visits can make it easier to choose a college. Colleges welcome visitors, and a visit is the best way to find out what a school is really like.
  • Get a feel for each school by attending classes, talking with students and faculty, and walking around the campus.
  • Call ahead and set up appointments for a tour and personal interview with staff at both admissions and financial aid offices.
  • Check out campus facilities, read the student newspaper and bulletin boards, and look into activities and special services.
